Canis Lykaon (黒刃の狗神(ケイニス・リュカオン), Keinisu Ryukaon), also known as Dog God of the Black Blade (黒刃の狗神, Kuroba no Inugami), is a Longinus wielded by Tobio Ikuse.

Summary

In the past, the God of the Bible used two individual sources for the Canis Lykaon. One of them being the King of Arcadia, Lycaon who incurred the wrath of Zeus, causing the King to be turned into a wolf after being cursed; and Ame-no-Ohabari, the divine sword in Shintoism used to kill Hinokagutsuchi. As a result of the distortion caused by the union of both, the Sacred Gear was turned from a wolf into a dog. Lycaon's curse also tainted the legendary sword, resulting in the blade losing its divinity and turning into an ominous blade.

After Tobio Ikuse was born with the Longinus, Canis Lykaon, it was one of the rare instances where it already had its Balance Breaker already activated. Because of this his grandmother, Ageha Ikuse used a Buddist sealing ritual to seal away the Canis Lykaon. After discovering his Sacred Gear, Tobio decided to name the dog Jin.

Appearance

Canis Lykaon takes the form of a large red-eyed black dog, but it initially took the form of a puppy four-years prior. But later, it turned into a large dog.

Abilities

Canis Lykaon summons a black dog, which the current possessor, Tobio Ikuse named Jin, which also acts as an Independant Avatar with its own instincts. During the events of Light Novel DX.2, Jin could leave Tobio and act on his own, assisting Akeno Himejima. Canis Lykaon can produce blades that are able to slice apart Gods and Buddhas as Ame-no-Ohabari, which killed Hinokagutsuchi who is part of it too, being described as able to "cut all things".

Tobio has gained enough control over Canis Lykaon that he can alter its aura wavelength, which he used to counter Gressil's Resistance.

Canis Lykaon allows the wielder to produce several distorted black blades from shadows in Tobio's field of vision. Because he prefers to wield scythes rather than swords, Jin can produce scythes for him to wield in combat. He could use his black blades to even sever the technique Walburga used, which consisted of tens of thousands of random spells by stabbing them into them.

Having mastered Canis Lykaon, Tobio and Jin can coordinate their attacks almost as if they are one being instead of two, including being capable of melting into the shadows to avoid attacks and to also attack themselves, causing an Executive-Class Grim Reaper to wonder if he was Human.

In True Volume 3, it is revealed that because of Ame-no-Ohabari, which holds the flames of the Fire God Hinokagutsuchi, Tobio is able to cover his blades in cursed black and crimson flames.

Four years prior, during the events of -SLASHDØG-, Jin would produce blades out from its body, but after reacting to Tobio's desires and maturing in his matured state, it shifted this ability to produce an assortment of blades from shadows instead, as well as move through them extending as far as its wielder's sight, as well as transform into a sword; at the same time losing its ability to produce blades from its body. Following Tobio's personal preference, Jin can produce scythes for him to wield instead.

During the events of -SLASHDØG- the Canis Lykaon was noted to have an ability to call together other Sacred Gears of the same wavelength or similar compatible wavelength. This was used to explain why of the seven confirmed Sacred Gear users of Ryoukuu, the Four Fiends would be among them.

Night Celestial Slash Dogs (夜天光の乱刃狗神(ナイト・セレスティアル・スラッシュ・ドッグズ), Naito Seresutiaru Surasshu Dogguzu), also known as Mad Black Dog of the Glowing Night Sky (夜天光の乱刃狗神, Yozora-kō no Ranba Inugami), is the original Balance Breaker of Canis Lykaon, which Tobio awakened the moment he was born.

Tobio becomes covered in darkness and transforms into a black humanoid with six tails, while Jin transforms into a large full-grown hound. In this form, Tobio attains enhanced strength and is able to also extend his shadows beyond the range of a huge building complex and create an innumerable amount of blades in them, tinging even the sky and earth in darkness. Tobio is able to cut apart both physical things and Magical abilities, as shown when he severed Walburga's Teleportation routes, which were composed of tens of thousands of random spells. He is also capable of manifesting blades with strong curses and harvesting the souls of others with his blades.

Perfectus Tenebrae Lykaon et Fortis Densus Laelaps

Perfectus Tenebrae Lykaon et Fortis Densus Laelaps (深淵なりし冥漠の獣魔、英傑であれ常夜刃の狗神(ペルフェクトゥス・テネブラエ・リュカオン・エト・フォルティス・デンス・ライラプス), Perufekutusu Tenebrae Ryukaon Eto Fortis Dens Rairapusu), also known as the Dark Demon Beast of the Abyss, Dog God of the Hero's Eternal Night Blade (深淵なりし冥漠の獣魔、英傑であれ常夜刃の狗神, Shin'en nari shi Meibaku no Jūma, Eiketsu Deare Tokoyaba no Inugami), is the Abyss Side of his Night Celestial Slash Dogs, which evolved after Tobio had polished his Balance Breaker to its limit.

After Tobio recites a curse-like chant, his entire body becomes covered in darkness taking form as a humanoid black beast that resembles a dog wielding a long and immensely sharp scythe. In this form, he maintains all of the abilities of his Night Celestial Slash Dogs, which are even further enhanced as he can cut through Nyx's barrier and slice apart the fabric of space. The form can produce clones of Jin in large numbers, who can make use of his blades. Tobio can also alter the wavelength of his blades to counter his opponents.

Trivia

• The nickname Jin is derived from the kanji for blade (刃).
• Canis Lykaon is a reference to the scientific name of the Eastern Timber Wolf (Canis Lycaon), a wolf that lives in Eastern Canada. It may also be a reference to Lycaon, the man that was turned into a wolf by Zeus as punishment for feeding him Nyctimus, Lycaon's own son. The form and the backstory in Slash/Dog, however, is similar to the Chinese Tiangou.
  • It is revealed in Slash/Dog that Canis Lycaon contains a composite of two beings: Lycaon as mentioned above, together with the Ama no Ohabari, one of the Totsuka no Tsurugi in Japanese mythology. Ama no Ohabari was used by Izanagi to kill his own son Hinokagutsuchi, whose birth burned his mother Izanami to death.
• Perfectus Tenebrae Lykaon et Fortis Densus Laelaps means "Perfect Darkness Wolf and Strong Dense Hunter".
  • Why Laelaps means "Hunter" in this case is because Laelaps is the name of a dog in Greek mythology that always caught what he hunted and so would refer to how Tobio's dogs always catch their 'prey'.
