The Brave Saints also known as the Royal Users, are a set of 13 cards used by the Angels to increase their ranks by reincarnating other beings into Angels. The Brave Saints are based on the Evil Pieces system of the Devils, albeit being based on a suit of playing cards rather than chess

Summary

Irina revealing her mark as an Angel

Irina, the first Brave Saint introduced

The Brave Saint system was created after the peace treaty between the Three Factions by copying the Devil's Evil Pieces system and the Fallen Angel's Artificial Sacred Gears technology. This was so that the Angels could increase their numbers since they could no longer depend on God to create new Angels. The Brave Saints, however, are currently only limited to the Seraphs.

The Brave Saints system, which the Heavens created by imitating the concept of the Evil Pieces, is the set of 13 cards which each of the Seraph and high-level Angels have in order to reincarnate other beings into Angels (high-level Angels choose the "suit" of their liking. Though the ones with a fixed "suit" are Michael with Spade ♠, Gabriel with Heart ♥, Raphael with Club ♣, Uriel with Diamond ♦). Most of the reincarnated Angels are former humans. Unlike Devils who base their choice on strength alone regardless of the species, the Heavens choose and reincarnate talented humans who are strong followers and have a "pure heart".

So far, only 10 Seraphs are permitted to use the Brave Saints according to Irina in Volume 6; however, Michael hopes to expand the system to include high-level Angels as well.

History

Sometime after the peace conference of the Three Factions, the engineers of Heaven obtained the cooperation of the Grigori and the Devil side's engineers, who lent them their technology and the attribute crystals from Agreas, which allowed the engineers of Heaven to create a reincarnation system similar to that of the Devil's Evil Pieces system. The Seraphs were each given a suite of Brave Saints reincarantion cards which they used to reincarnate various exorcists into Angels, such as Michael reincarnating Irina Shidou as his Ace and Dulio Gesualdo as his Joker.

In Volume 6, Irina Shidou was sent to live in Kuoh Town as a representative of the Angel side as Michael felt that there was a lack Angel presence in Kuoh Town despite the Kuoh Treaty. She enrolled in the Kuoh Academy, becoming Issei, Xenovia and Asia's classmate as she demonstrated her status as a reincarnated Angel.

In Volume 12, during the Demonic Beast Riot, the Brave Saints were sent to assist in defending the Underworld and take down the rampaging Anti-Monsters.

In Volume 16, some of the Brave Saints such as Irina Shidou and Griselda Quarta joined Team DxD, with Dulio being appointed the leader of the team due to the Angels having the best reputation among the other factions.

In Volume 18, most of the Brave Saints helped to defend heaven from Qlippoth's invasion, fighting the mass-produced Evil Dragons.

In Volume 19, the Brave Saints assisted the members of DxD in defeating the rebelling exorcists.

In Volume 20, the Brave Saints helped invade the Qlippoth-controlled Agreas, as they served as a diversionary unit along with the Sitri peerage, allowing the rest of the group to move in undetected.

In Volume 21, during the Evil Dragon War, the Brave Saints helped to defend the Norse World alongside the members of Team DxD. After Trihexa split into multiple bodies, the Brave Saints split into two groups to deal with the situation as one half; lead by Dulio went to fight on the Japanese front, while the other half went to fight on the European front.

In Volume 22, most of the Brave Saints joined the Azazel Cup, creating the team; Team Trump Card of Heaven.

In Volume 23, Team Trump Card of Heaven had a Rating Game match against Issei's Team Red Dragon Emperor of the Blazing Truth, which they won.

In True Volume 4, during the Hell Disaster, most of the reincarnated Angels were stationed outside to attack the bases of the Artificial Devils while Irina Shidou and Lint Sellzen joining the main team in London; as Irina assisted in defeating Verrine while Lint fought as member of the main offense group, against Hades' Grim Reapers and Artificial Devils, protecting Asia Argento.

Abilities

The Brave Saint allows the Angels to reincarnate or angelize humans into Angels. In contrast to the Evil Pieces which consist of different traits and values for each piece, the Brave Saints have many special effects which comes from actual card games like poker and blackjack.

The Brave Saints Angels possess the same abilities as Angels, as they are capable of conjuring Light Weapons that are lethal to Devils and other creatures of darkness. Some Brave Saints such as Mirana, Ryuu and Jessica have demonstrated unique use of their light abilities such as being able to generate light from the ground, incorporate light in their physical strikes and create a solid light barrier.

Like all Angels, the Brave Saints also possess the ability to fly via their feathered wings.

The Brave Saint system, just like the traits of each of the chess pieces of the Evil Pieces have their own special ability and are based on card games, for example “Black Jack”. Reincarnated angels will gather together base on their numbers and suits to make a 21. For example each suit prepares reincarnated angels with the number 4, 6, and 10 and if they make them team up with the Ace (1) Irina and cooperate with her, they would be able to unleash overwhelming power.

Also, added in is the Poker’s system as well. Five High-level angels or Seraphs who are Kings gather members from Ace to Queen and by forming a ‘hand’ it will give birth to a certain power. An added advantage is that effect will still display with members of the different suits. The effect, however, will be stronger if it is between the members of the same suits. Similar with the Evil Pieces, the Brave Saints cannot reincarnate Gods/Buddhas and Dragon God into Angels even with a Joker card.

Variations

Joker

The Joker Card is a special type of card whose function is similar to that of the Mutation Pieces. A Joker does not belong to any of the 4 types of cards. Aside from the main Joker, Dulio, there is another Joker (commonly referred as the Extra Joker), but the status and information on the Extra Joker is currently unknown.

In addition to the Joker and Extra Joker, there are other Reincarnated Angel with silver wings that serve as Extra Joker candidates. Silver-winged Angels were candidates for the [Extra Joker] position that existed among Reincarnated Angels. There were a number of people who could utilize the [Joker] in the Angels’ [Trump Card] prepared in order to act as a substitute. The [Extra Joker] in the Angels’ [Trump Card] system was used when a [Joker] couldn’t be utilized or when a substitute of the [Joker] was needed to be on the move. It was a feature based on the item used to reincarnate someone into a reincarnated Angel, [Trump]’s Extra Joker (Joker’s semi card).
